The name of the city comes from the aymara culture. It means place to sleep or rest. It is said that the natives named it like this because everytime they came from the highlands they would see the sealions resting on the shore. This place built itself. No one founded it. Even when Charles Darwin visited this place on July 12th, 1835 said that living here was like living on a boat. There were only a thousand people living here and they had to survive bringing even drinking water from Pisagua which turned to be really expensive. Back then this part of the country belonged to Peru.
We can understand why Darwin pictured this place as he did, giving the fact that this is one of the few places in the world where it hardly ever rains and that the Dragon Hill is the biggest urban dune in the world.
Now with around 250.000 inhabitants (according to the latest census) the situation has really changed. We are known worldwide as a touristic city and along the country as a very thriving one.
I bet you didn't know at least some of these facts. So next time you get some time to surf the web check information about the city you were born or you live in. I'm sure you're going to be amazed!!!

Activities

Actividades

THE KIND OF EDUCATION I DEMAND

Get Your Own! View Slideshow

Chilean Education System is facing a very memorable moment during these days, its most important characters are playing a very significant and active role. During the current year we have seen different kind of public manifestations that come not only from teachers but also from students of a wide range of schools in the country.

For many years now, Chilean students have not shown so much interest about the education quality they are receiving. All the pleas presented by the students taken in conjunction with the model organization of the High School National Meeting, represent a real movement that caused different reactions along the country.

Nowadays, it is a fact that students are very different from ten years ago. Even though there are many of them that do not know in which proffesional area they want to develop, they do know that education quality is a right for all the people.

In the following activity we will see how a Chilean student writes a foreign friend about the educational situation and how she achieved to study abroad.

Activities
